Welcome to the second edition of the NHS Scotland Academy Newsletter, keeping you up to date with all the latest developments, success stories and upcoming events.
Formally launched in October 2021, the NHS Scotland Academy will support the rollout of the NHSScotland Recovery Plan by initially focusing on the accelerated training needs of NHSScotland.
As the NHS Scotland Academy continues to grow and develop, new programmes and access routes will be rolled out. In this edition, we have included some examples of the exciting and innovative ways the Academy is already benefitting staff and patients from all across NHSScotland.
In our last newsletter, we highlighted the exciting work that was being carried out by the Community Pharmacy Training Programme.
This initiative has improved local access to healthcare for thousands of people all across Scotland and is assisting the NHS Scotland Recovery plan by easing pressure on GPs, out of hours services and local emergency departments.
The programme that provides pharmacists across Scotland with the additional skills required to assess, advise and treat patients for a range of minor illnesses and common clinical conditions has now delivered more than 340 delegate days to date.
Designed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) in collaboration with Dundee Institute for Healthcare Simulation has been successfully delivered by the world-class facilities of the NHS Scotland Academy at NHS Golden Jubilee along with other clinical skills training sites nationally.

Since the successful launch of the Preparation for Work in Health and Social Care Programme in December 2021, 669 learners from around the country have accessed the online resource an amazing 2,188 times.
The digital resource enables people who are new to roles in health and social care, and those thinking about applying for a role in the field, to be well-prepared. This is available at anytime and anywhere, offering short, interactive modules through videos and quizzes.

The Academy has continued to work collaboratively with the Scottish Government and partners to support the National Treatment Centres Programme (NTC) through accelerated workforce development.
The first priority of this programme, Foundations of Perioperative Practice, is continuing to progress with 20 learners taking part in cohorts 1 and 2, and with cohort 3 scheduled to begin in June 2022.
The training is open to registered nurses, providing them the tools, skills and strategies they need to support the delivery of safe patient care through a variety of training from pain management, communication skills and a wide range of skills labs.

All candidates recruited through this programme will have a 12-week period from arrival to complete the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Test of Competence in order to achieve their registration.
At the NHS Scotland Academy, we are developing a suite of online Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) preparation resources to support NHS Boards get international nurses ready and do the best they can in the test.
The digital learning resources will support both the Educators and Learners undertake OSCE preparation and will be available on Turas.
Widening Access Routes: Armed Forces Service Leavers & Veterans
With vacancies and skills gaps in many health and social services, the NHS Scotland Academy is supporting the wider approach to identify and attract additional workforce to support the implementation of the National Workforce Strategy 2022.
Armed forces service leavers and veterans offer a range of skills which could positively impact on the current health and social care staffing challenges.
In collaboration with key stakeholders, the NHS Scotland Academy is developing ways to support increasing employment opportunities for armed forces service leavers and veterans, including the development of online resources that will support the recruitment pathway modules, established access to work experience and insight opportunities.
